Strengthening Bilateral Relations
New Delhi, Feb 4: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is poised to visit India, a move anticipated to bolster the relationship between the two nations amid a shifting global landscape, according to Brazilian Ambassador to India, Kenneth H. da Nobrega. He emphasized the increasing collaboration in trade, technology, and geopolitical matters.
In a recent interview, Ambassador da Nobrega highlighted that President Lula's visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to Brazil less than a year ago, showcasing the robust and evolving nature of India-Brazil relations.
Last month, President Lula confirmed his travel plans to India for February.
He pointed out that both nations are committed to prioritizing their national interests while enhancing cooperation in vital sectors.
Key Aspects of the Upcoming Visit
During the interview, the ambassador was asked about the significance of President Lula's visit in light of the changing global order. He responded, stating that the visit, along with several high-level exchanges, reflects the close coordination between the two countries and the advancement of their strategic partnership.
When questioned about the expected highlights and agreements from this visit, he mentioned that the leaders would aim for concrete outcomes in trade, investment, and technological collaborations. Key sectors of focus include energy, defense, health, digital public infrastructure, and initiatives to facilitate major Brazilian companies entering India and vice versa.
Modi's Global Leadership
On Prime Minister Modi's role as a global leader, Ambassador da Nobrega remarked on Modi's undeniable global presence. Having served in India for over two years, he has observed a significant influx of international leaders visiting India to engage on various issues.
Discussing the geopolitical challenges, he expressed that both India and Brazil are concentrating on collaborative efforts to navigate the complexities of the current geopolitical climate, emphasizing cooperation and joint initiatives.
Trade Agreements and Economic Outlook
Brazil and India are working towards enhancing their economic and technological partnerships. The ambassador noted the importance of their longstanding diplomatic relations, which have lasted over 70 years, as a foundation of trust in today's global context.
Regarding India's recent free trade agreement with the European Union and its trade negotiations with Canada and Brazil, he mentioned that Brazil is keen on expanding its trade preferences agreement with India, which was established nearly two decades ago. Initial meetings are being planned to broaden this agreement, with a positive outlook from both sides. This engagement also extends to MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market).
Finally, when asked about the Indian economy, he referred to the latest Economic Survey, which indicates that India is projected to maintain a growth rate of 6 to 7 percent annually in the upcoming years, with the government aiming to enhance the country's technological competitiveness.
