The woman who averted a major disaster hails from Etah, specifically from the village of Gularia in the Awaghar area. Omvati, the woman in question, was on her way to her fields around 8 AM when she noticed something alarming near the Kulba railway halt station, located just 100 meters away.

To her shock, she discovered a broken railway track. Knowing that a train was scheduled to pass through that route shortly, Omvati realized the potential danger. Her instincts were correct, as this was indeed the time for the Etah-Tundla passenger train to arrive.

How She Saved the Passengers

Initially stunned, Omvati quickly gathered her courage and decided to take action to protect the passengers. She rushed back home, grabbed a red cloth, and returned to the site of the broken track. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, she tied the red cloth near the damaged area.

Not stopping there, she waited for the train to arrive. Soon, the sound of the Etah-Tundla passenger train's whistle filled the air. As the train approached, Omvati waved her sari's red pallu to attract attention.

The Train Comes to a Halt

With the red cloth tied to the track and her sari waving, Omvati's strategy worked. The locomotive pilot noticed both the red cloth and her waving pallu. He immediately applied the emergency brakes, bringing the train to a stop just short of the broken track.

Once the train halted and the driver disembarked, Omvati pointed out the damaged track. The pilot was taken aback upon seeing the break. Authorities were promptly notified, and repairs were completed within half an hour, allowing the train to continue its journey.
