Silchar, Mar 29: The upcoming Assembly election has thrust Borkhola in Cachar into the spotlight, driven by newly drawn boundaries, heightened expectations, and competing development claims.
With a voter base exceeding 2.04 lakh in this newly configured constituency, the race is shaping up to be highly competitive, primarily between the BJP and Congress, who are both gearing up for the April 9 elections.
Although the contest is largely viewed as a two-party race, the candidacy of BJP dissident Amalendu Das, who is running as an Independent after being suspended for alleged anti-party actions, adds an unpredictable element to the mix.
Additionally, the participation of SUCI(C) candidate Shampa Dey further complicates the electoral dynamics, potentially affecting how votes are distributed.
Leading the BJP's campaign is former legislator Kishore Nath, who aims to reclaim his position after a five-year hiatus, emphasizing his previous term from 2016 to 2021.
Nath asserts that his tenure saw development reach all gram panchayats, highlighting advancements in road infrastructure and administrative services.
With the backing of the party's organizational strength, Nath has ramped up his outreach efforts, promising continuity and accelerated development if re-elected.
“I have consistently stood by the people, and I pledge to work towards comprehensive development in the constituency. Building on the BJP government's agenda, I will ensure the implementation of more effective, people-centric projects,” Nath stated during a recent campaign event in Borkhola, which was attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
On the other hand, Congress candidate Dr. Amit Kalwar, a local medical professional, is attempting to shift the narrative towards a progressive vision.
Positioning himself as a leader focused on service, Kalwar has developed a structured plan and launched a dedicated website to connect directly with voters.
His campaign prioritizes healthcare, education, tourism, and job creation. Kalwar emphasized that healthcare is the “cornerstone of development,” advocating for enhanced grassroots medical facilities.
“A significant proposal is to establish ‘Borkhola Health Desks’ at Silchar Civil Hospital and Silchar Medical College and Hospital,” he explained, noting that this initiative would improve patient access, streamline processes, and provide institutional support for local residents.
“Having grown up in Borkhola, I am deeply committed to its overall development, ensuring sustained progress and social harmony. The constituency also has strong tourism potential, which I aim to transform into tangible opportunities,” Kalwar added.
As the campaign intensifies, Borkhola showcases a complex political narrative influenced by delimitation, competing development claims, and rising voter expectations.
