Mhatre surrendered to the police the day after the High Court's decision to stay the magistrate's order approving his bail. He and three accomplices were taken into custody on July 8, following an incident where they reportedly assaulted two doctors and other hospital staff at the Shastri Nagar Municipal Hospital. This attack occurred after a complaint was filed, stating that a nine-month pregnant woman facing complications was denied admission due to a lack of available beds in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The incident sparked significant outrage within the medical community, especially after a CCTV video of the assault circulated on social media.
