Chennai, July 14: A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at a steel melting facility located in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur district, where a boiler explosion resulted in the death of a migrant worker and left four others with severe burn injuries.

The victim, identified as Ravi, was a worker from a northern state and lost his life instantly when the boiler exploded during operational hours.

Four of his colleagues sustained critical burn injuries and were promptly rescued and transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Initial reports indicate that the explosion happened unexpectedly while workers were engaged in routine tasks within the steel melting unit.

The force of the explosion was so intense that it ignited a significant fire, causing flames and thick smoke to engulf the industrial area, leading to widespread panic among nearby workers.

Emergency services were quickly notified, and firefighters arrived on the scene, battling the blaze for nearly an hour to bring it under control and prevent it from spreading to adjacent facilities.

Law enforcement also arrived to secure the area, facilitating both rescue and firefighting efforts.

Authorities have yet to determine the precise cause of the boiler explosion.

An in-depth investigation is underway to find out if the incident was due to a technical issue, equipment malfunction, or any breach of industrial safety regulations.

Investigators will also check if the boiler had received the necessary maintenance and safety inspections as mandated.

This incident has reignited concerns regarding industrial safety in Tiruvallur district, known for housing one of Tamil Nadu’s largest manufacturing hubs.

This explosion follows a recent industrial disaster in the same district, where an ammonia gas leak at a shrimp processing plant near Periyapalayam resulted in the deaths of 18 migrant workers, with extensive operations conducted over four days to eliminate the hazardous gas before sealing the facility.

The boiler explosion has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved workplace safety standards in the region's industrial sectors.

Officials are continuing their investigation while assessing the full impact of the explosion.
