Bodoland People's Front Leader Open to UPPL's State Representation but Not in BTC
Bodoland Political Dynamics
Kokrajhar, Jan 4: Hagrama Mohilary, the president of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Chief of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), expressed on Sunday that he does not oppose the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) gaining a foothold in the Assam Assembly or joining the state Cabinet following the 2026 elections.
Nonetheless, he firmly dismissed the possibility of forming any alliance with UPPL within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
During a press conference after initiating the construction of a three-storeyed RCC girls’ hostel with a capacity of 100 at Bineswar Barhma Engineering College in Kokrajhar, Mohilary stated that while UPPL's involvement could be acceptable at the state or national level, it is not welcome in the BTC.
“UPPL has participated in the NDA within the state Assembly and has held a Cabinet minister position, but they do not have a role here in BTC. If the BJP chooses to include UPPL in the state or at the national level again, that is their decision, but they hold no influence in BTC,” Mohilary remarked.
He explicitly ruled out any collaboration with UPPL in the Bodoland area, asserting, “There is no possibility of working with UPPL regarding BTR. We will not reach any agreement with them.”
Emphasizing the ongoing development initiatives, the BTC chief noted that numerous significant projects are currently in progress throughout the Bodoland region.
“Many projects are underway in BTC. Just yesterday (Saturday), a mini secretariat project worth Rs 150 crore was approved in Udalguri,” Mohilary disclosed.
Regarding the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections, he mentioned that preparations are already in motion, with indications suggesting that the elections might occur earlier than expected.
“We have learned that the 2026 Assembly elections are likely to be held in April, prior to Rongali Bihu. We are actively preparing, although the distribution of seats within the NDA alliance has yet to be finalized,” he stated.
The BPF leader also indicated that his party would advocate for a larger allocation of seats. “We will request more seats, and I am confident there will be negotiations,” Mohilary added.
Additionally, he confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on January 17 and praised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for organizing a Bagurumba dance performance.
“On January 17, Prime Minister Modi will be in the state. A performance featuring 10,000 participants in Bagurumba dance will occur in Guwahati. It is wonderful to see our folk culture showcased on an international platform,” he remarked.
