Political Controversy Amid Natural Disaster

MANDI: Chandan Pandit, the state spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), has launched a fierce critique against Himachal Pradesh's Revenue Minister, Jagat Singh Negi. He accused Negi of making politically charged and insensitive remarks during the ongoing natural disaster affecting the Seraj constituency in Mandi district.

Speaking to reporters in Mandi, Pandit stated, “Minister Jagat Singh Negi is engaging in political maneuvering even amidst a humanitarian crisis. His comment, ‘Only when a stone pricks the shoe, one feels the pain,’ is not only heartless but also a direct affront to the suffering residents of Seraj.”

The region has recently experienced severe rainfall, leading to landslides and significant casualties, prompting ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. Local communities and officials are tirelessly working to restore normalcy.

Pandit also criticized Minister Negi for targeting former Chief Minister and current Seraj MLA, Jai Ram Thakur, who was among the first to visit the disaster-stricken areas. “Jai Ram Thakur arrived on-site within hours of the initial reports. He traversed remote villages, evaluated the damage, and facilitated communication between the public and the administration. His actions starkly contrast with those of ministers who remain in conference rooms instead of providing on-ground assistance,” remarked Pandit.

He further claimed that Negi’s comments were an obvious attempt to politicize a tragedy that necessitates sensitivity and unity. “The citizens of Himachal Pradesh do not seek sarcasm from their leaders; they expect empathy, decisive action, and leadership. Those who fail to grasp this have no ethical right to hold office,” he added.

The BJYM has urged Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to step in and advise his cabinet members to exercise restraint and prioritize responsible governance during this crisis. Pandit emphasized that inappropriate remarks from senior ministers only exacerbate the disconnect between the government and the affected populace.

“The youth wing of the BJP stands in solidarity with all families impacted by this disaster. Our teams are actively providing support on the ground, and we are dedicated to assisting in every possible manner,” Pandit concluded, stating, “This is not a moment for political games; it is a time for service, accountability, and compassion.”

The situation has intensified political tensions in the state, as the ongoing disaster continues to challenge the preparedness and response of the Himachal Pradesh government.
