BJP's Foundation Day: A Reflection on Integral Humanism and Global Leadership
The Essence of Antyodaya
Dr. Amrik Singh Thakur
“Antyodaya is not charity — it is justice.” This quote from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya encapsulates the essence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it commemorates its Foundation Day. The BJP is not just a ruling party in India; it embodies a significant civilizational philosophy that Upadhyaya articulated over sixty years ago. For the first time since independence, this philosophy has been transformed into a governing doctrine, economic reality, and a source of global confidence. While many political entities lose their foundational ideas over time, the BJP, celebrating its Foundation Day on April 6, stands as a notable exception.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the philosophical core established by Upadhyaya has not only endured but has also been realized on a scale that Upadhyaya could only dream of in the 1960s. The journey from a grassroots philosophy to a position of global statesmanship is a testament to the evolution of the BJP.
Integral Humanism: A Unique Approach
Upadhyaya's Integral Humanism was his philosophical answer to the shortcomings of both Western individualism and Soviet collectivism. He believed that neither model suited Bharat, as they failed to acknowledge the interconnectedness of the individual within society. Instead of rejecting development, he advocated for a humane and inclusive approach that prioritized the welfare of the last person, a concept he termed 'antyodaya.' This was not merely an idealistic notion; it was a directive for governance, awaiting the right political climate for implementation.
Modinomics: Implementing Antyodaya
The significance of the Modi era lies in its ability to translate Upadhyaya’s philosophy into practical governance. The Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile framework has effectively eliminated the middleman, a persistent issue in welfare distribution. The Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system has reportedly saved ₹3.48 lakh crore by reducing leakages in welfare delivery, marking a substantial improvement in public spending efficiency. This model serves as a valuable lesson for governments worldwide in balancing financial prudence with equitable governance.
The reach of this approach has been extensive. Initiatives like PM-KISAN have provided direct income support to over 110 million farming families, while PM Mudra Yojana has offered collateral-free loans to street vendors and micro-entrepreneurs. Ayushman Bharat has made healthcare accessible to the bottom 40 percent of the population, and One Rank One Pension has addressed long-standing injustices faced by the armed forces. Each initiative embodies the principle of antyodaya, transforming the citizen-state relationship from one of dependency to entitlement.
Bharat as a Global Leader
The domestic achievements of the BJP must be viewed alongside its international narrative. Upadhyaya envisioned Bharat not as a nation seeking dominance but as a civilization offering a humane and pluralistic model to the world. Modi's vision of Bharat as 'Vishwa Mitra'—a friend to the world—reflects this philosophy in foreign policy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India provided vaccines to over 98 countries, showcasing its commitment to global solidarity.
The G-20 Presidency in 2023, themed 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,' marked a historic moment by incorporating the Global South's voice into its communiqué. Bharat has gained the trust of various global powers, including Washington and Moscow, as well as Brussels and Riyadh. The unprecedented visit of Chinese Communist Party leaders to BJP headquarters in 2025 signifies the extent of Bharat's civilizational confidence.
Restoring Security and Civilizational Aspirations
Security is fundamental to any civilizational aspiration. The Doklam standoff in 2017 and the Galwan Valley confrontation in 2020 tested India's resolve against Chinese territorial aggression. In both instances, Indian forces demonstrated their strength, altering global perceptions of India's deterrence capabilities. The surgical strikes in 2016 marked a significant shift in India's approach to cross-border terrorism, asserting its right to pre-emptive action.
The BJP has secured the confidence of the Indian electorate in three consecutive general elections. However, the more profound journey is civilizational, as a philosophical idea has moved from the periphery of political discourse to the forefront of how Bharat operates domestically and presents itself internationally. The world is in search of a development model that respects cultural diversity, ensures security without aggression, and fosters international cooperation without subjugation. Bharat, guided by the values articulated by Upadhyaya and embodied in Modi's policies, offers this model as a lived reality.
Conclusion
The journey from a railway track in Mughal Sarai to the significant tables of the 21st century illustrates the progress of Ekatma Manav Darshan and the path Bharat continues to joyfully traverse.
