Guwahati, June 18: On Thursday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that Dr. Habbey Teron, a BJP legislator, will be the candidate for the Deputy Speaker position in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

In a social media post, Sarma expressed his confidence in Dr. Teron, who represents the Amri (ST) constituency, stating that his nomination would enhance the representation of tribal communities within the legislative framework.

"I am delighted to share that Dr. Habbey Teron, the Hon'ble MLA from Amri (ST) Hills, will be our candidate for the Deputy Speaker role in the Assam Legislative Assembly," the Chief Minister wrote.

Sarma emphasized that Dr. Teron is a trained medical professional and the first elected official from the newly established Amri Assembly constituency.

"As a medical professional and the inaugural elected representative from the newly formed Amri constituency, Dr. Teron embodies the hopes of our tribal communities and will amplify the voices of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in the legislative arena," Sarma added.

The Chief Minister also extended his best wishes to Dr. Teron for the upcoming election for the Deputy Speaker's position.

Dr. Teron's nomination is particularly noteworthy as he comes from a tribal-majority hill area and represents the newly created Amri (ST) constituency.

The Deputy Speaker's role is crucial within the Assembly, aiding the Speaker in managing legislative activities and overseeing House proceedings when the Speaker is unavailable.

Given that the ruling National Democratic Alliance holds a solid majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly, Dr. Teron's election is anticipated to be a mere formality.
