Guwahati, Oct 9: The counting of votes for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is currently in progress, with BJP candidate Devasish Sharma in the lead. He has expressed optimism about the party's chances of winning, highlighting the positive trends and support from minority communities.

Sharma stated, “The current trends suggest a victory for us. I prefer not to criticize others, but it is evident that the public is seeking development and change.”

He emphasized that the votes garnered by the BJP-AGP alliance in minority areas indicate a strong desire for progress among the electorate.

“The support we have received in these regions demonstrates a clear preference for development. Our grassroots connection with the people is crucial. Voters have shown that they prioritize development over religious affiliations,” he added.

Regarding Samaguri, a constituency historically dominated by Congress, Sharma remarked that the party had taken its support for granted.

As of 2:30 PM, Sharma leads with 420,705 votes, while AIUDF's Badruddin Ajmal follows with 310,076 votes, and Congress's Shibamoni Bora has received 75,908 votes.

Earlier, Ajmal noted that voting trends differ by region, predicting that Sharma would excel in Hindu-majority areas, while he would perform better in minority regions.

“In areas with a Hindu majority, Devasish will lead, while I will take the lead in minority areas, with Congress trailing behind. I am confident we will secure victory,” Ajmal asserted.

Assam's Leader of the Opposition, Wazed Ali Choudhury, mentioned that Congress had anticipated a favorable outcome based on their campaign assessments but recognized that trends were shifting.

“Our field assessments indicated strong public support, but the situation is evolving. The BJP's rise is linked to AIUDF's influence. If we can weaken AIUDF, the BJP's position will also decline. However, this election shows AIUDF gaining traction,” he stated.

Counting is taking place at two locations in Nagaon: Dawson Higher Secondary School and Nagaon Government Boys’ School, with 14 counting tables at each site. A total of 15 candidates are contesting in this bypoll.

As the counting continues, BJP's Devasish Sharma remains in the lead, followed by AIUDF's Ajmal and Congress's Shibamoni in third place. The final results will reveal the margin of victory and the outcomes for the three candidates in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.
