BJP Unveils Major Cleanup of Voter Rolls, Accuses Congress of Misinformation
Significant Changes to Electoral Rolls Announced
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Sunday that it has successfully eliminated over one crore duplicate entries and 2.8 crore names of deceased individuals from the electoral rolls across 31 states and Union Territories as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative. This move, according to the party, highlights the underlying issues within the electoral system, claiming that those who have profited from inaccurate voter lists are now expressing outrage.
The ruling party also criticized the Congress for allegedly misleading the public regarding the SIR process, urging them to acknowledge their electoral losses with respect for the democratic process rather than resorting to falsehoods.
The BJP posed a challenging question to the INDI Alliance: "Who stands to gain from maintaining these duplicate names on the voter rolls? If there was no wrongdoing, why the alarm over the cleanup of voter lists?"
In a separate statement, the party revealed that 9.43 crore names of individuals who were either absent or had moved have also been identified and removed from the rolls. "This is not a trivial cleanup; it represents 9.92% of the total electorate. Yet, the INDI Alliance is opposing this essential effort to maintain accurate voter lists," the BJP asserted.
The party reiterated that the removal of 2.8 crore deceased voters' names was part of the SIR exercise conducted across the 31 states and UTs.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi emphasized that the Election Commission had confirmed that all significant decisions, including the SIR, were made unanimously by the three election commissioners.
Trivedi criticized the Congress for attempting to mislead the public and undermine the credibility of constitutional bodies like the Election Commission, stating that their tactics of spreading misinformation in response to electoral defeats have been fully exposed by the Commission's recent statements.
He concluded by asserting that the appropriate response to electoral defeat should be grounded in facts and respect for the democratic mandate, rather than deceit.
