BJP Announces Candidates for Upcoming Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam has officially announced its candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections, releasing the list on Thursday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will contest from the Jalukbari seat, a position he has held since 2001. Additionally, Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the BJP from Congress, will run for the Dispur Assembly constituency.

Sarma has consistently won the Jalukbari seat in every Assembly election since 2001.

Pradyut Bordoloi, previously a Congress MP representing Nagaon, resigned from his party on Tuesday.

The following day, his son Prateek Bordoloi, who was set to contest from Margherita on a Congress ticket, withdrew his candidacy to prevent any potential confusion regarding his allegiance, as reported by a news outlet.

In a letter addressed to Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek clarified that he remains committed to the party despite his withdrawal.

The Assembly elections in Assam are scheduled for April 9, with results to be announced on May 9. The state comprises 126 Assembly seats.

The BJP is participating in the elections alongside its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front.

According to the seat-sharing arrangement, the BJP will contest 89 seats, while the Asom Gana Parishad will field candidates in 26 seats, and the Bodoland People’s Front will contest 11 seats, as per reports.

Notably, the candidate for the Sissiborgaon constituency has not been disclosed in the released list.

Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah has been nominated to contest from the Bihpura seat after joining the BJP in February. He previously led the Congress’ Assam unit from 2021 to 2025.

Other prominent BJP candidates include Pijush Hazarika, Rupali Langthasa, and Prasanta Phukan, who will contest from Jagiroad, Haflong, and Dibrugarh, respectively.

With the election announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has been activated in Assam, establishing guidelines for political parties, candidates, and the government during the election period. This code regulates speeches, campaigning, meetings, and other electoral activities.
