BJP Announces Candidates for Assam Elections

Guwahati, March 19: On Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) disclosed its candidate roster for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, presenting 88 nominees from various regions, showcasing a strategy that balances continuity with thoughtful expansion.

The list prominently includes several senior figures from the current cabinet, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma being renominated from Jalukbari.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will contest again from Golaghat, while other notable candidates are Ranoj Pegu (Dhemaji), Pijush Hazarika (Jagiroad), and Ashok Singhal (Dhekiajuli).

In a significant development, the party has nominated former Congress member and current Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi for the Dispur Assembly seat, highlighting its strategy to capitalize on recent political shifts.

Another recent addition from Congress, Bhupen Kumar Borah, has been selected to run from Bihpura.

The BJP has intensified its focus on urban areas, announcing candidates for all major constituencies in Kamrup (Metro), including Jalukbari, Dispur, Guwahati Central, and New Guwahati, indicating a plan to strengthen its urban voter base.

In Upper Assam, the party has chosen experienced candidates for crucial constituencies such as Duliajan, Tinsukia, Digboi, and Dibrugarh.

In Barak Valley, candidates with a strong local presence have been nominated for seats like Silchar, Karimganj North, and Hailakandi, reflecting a strategy focused on continuity.

Women candidates have a limited yet significant presence in this initial list, with six women nominated, slightly fewer than the seven in the 2021 elections.

The women candidates include Madhavi Das (Birsing-Jarua), Jyostna Kalita (Chaygaon), Nilima Devi (Mangaldai), Ajanta Neog (Golaghat), Niso Terangpi (Diphu), and Rupali Langthasa (Haflong).

The candidate list also covers several tribal and reserved constituencies, such as Boko-Chaygaon (ST), Tamulpur (ST), Dhemaji (ST), and Majuli (ST), along with seats in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts, demonstrating the party’s ongoing outreach to indigenous communities.

The finalization of candidates took place during a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee on Wednesday evening, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior leaders, including BJP’s Assam unit president Dilip Saikia.

With this candidate list, the BJP has set the stage for the electoral contest, relying on a combination of incumbency, organizational strength, and strategic candidate selections as it aims to maintain its governance in the state.
