Allegations of Property Ownership by TMC MP

The BJP in West Bengal has released a list of 43 properties allegedly linked to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, many of which are reportedly co-owned with his associates and family members. Sources indicate that the government led by Suvendu Adhikari will conduct a thorough investigation into the ownership details. This development follows a day after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), controlled by the TMC, issued notices regarding 17 properties associated with Mamata Banerjee's nephew. However, the TMC has dismissed this list as false and unreliable. One property that has garnered significant attention is co-owned with "Sayani Ghosh." Many social media users speculate that this could belong to Sayani Ghosh, the MP from Jadavpur. The document lists the property address as 19D, Seven Tanks Lane.

Sayani Ghosh Responds to Allegations

In response to the controversy, the Lok Sabha MP has categorically denied any connection to the allegations. Ghosh tweeted that while she cannot identify the individual in question, she asserts that it is certainly not her, as she comes from a humble background and has not profited significantly from politics. She urged those attempting to defame her without evidence to cease their actions, stating, "I will not be shaken; I will not tolerate this. Legal action will be taken against those spreading false news. This 'Ghosh' will not succumb to pressure."

Investigation into Abhishek Banerjee's Properties

According to the list, the 43 properties located in upscale areas of Kolkata are either co-owned or registered under Abhishek Banerjee's name. Notably, it remains unclear whether these properties belong to the Diamond Harbour MP. The owners' mobile numbers are also included in the list, which has been sourced from the KMC database. Interestingly, KMC is still under TMC control, with party MLA Firhad Hakim serving as the Mayor of Kolkata. Sources reveal that the BJP government will investigate the actual owners of these properties, the sources of funds used for their purchase, and any irregularities.

Political Context Ahead of 2024 Elections

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, Abhishek Banerjee declared assets worth ₹2.3 crore, liabilities of ₹36 lakh, and an annual income of ₹1.4 crore in his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The TMC, which has been targeted by the BJP since its historic electoral victory, claims that the circulated document is part of a political campaign. The BJP, in a statement, suggested that any journalist with a sense of ethics and understanding could verify the facts by visiting the addresses mentioned in the notice or calling the provided numbers instead of promoting the narratives spread by the BJP.
