BJP to Reinitiate Talks with Tipra Motha Party for Upcoming Village Committee Elections

BJP's Strategic Discussions Ahead of Local Elections

Agartala, August 9: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to restart negotiations with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) to consider a collaborative approach for the forthcoming elections to the Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

This initiative comes as a directive from the BJP's central leadership, which has instructed the state unit to pursue an electoral alliance ahead of the significant local body elections.

Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha traveled to New Delhi on Sunday, where he is anticipated to meet with TMP leaders, including the party's chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, alongside senior BJP officials. This meeting is expected to occur either on Sunday night or Monday.

"We will engage in discussions with TMP leaders in the presence of our central leadership regarding the upcoming Village Committee elections. At this moment, I cannot reveal the specifics of the discussions or any potential electoral arrangements," Saha informed reporters prior to his departure for Delhi.

The elections for 587 Village Committees under the TTAADC, which serve as the rural local governance bodies in the autonomous district council regions, are slated for later this year, coinciding with elections for over 20 urban local bodies.

The significance of these alliance discussions is heightened by the BJP's disappointing performance in the 2021 TTAADC elections, where the TMP dominated by securing 24 out of 28 elected seats, while the BJP only managed to win four seats after contesting separately due to a lack of a seat-sharing agreement.

Since that election, the TMP has been in control of the 30-member TTAADC, which oversees nearly 70% of Tripura's land area and is considered the state's second most crucial constitutional body after the Legislative Assembly.

This renewed engagement follows a series of strategic meetings held in New Delhi on August 6, during which the BJP's central leadership evaluated the party's readiness for the upcoming Village Committee and urban local body elections.

Party leaders indicated that the central leadership has urged the Tripura unit to bolster its organization while also exploring the potential for an electoral alliance with tribal partners.

The meetings included participation from BJP National President Nitin Nabin, National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh, Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, Tripura observer Rajdeep Roy, Chief Minister Manik Saha, state BJP president Abhishek Debroy, senior ministers, legislators, and other core committee members.
