BJP Finalizing Candidate List for Assam Elections

Guwahati, March 16: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to finalize its candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, with the party's Parliamentary Board expected to unveil the list on Wednesday evening.

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the party will convene its initial meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on candidate nominations.

“Tomorrow marks our first meeting regarding ticket allocations and nominations. The BJP candidate list will be made public by the Parliamentary Board on Wednesday evening,” Sarma informed reporters during his visit to a Durga temple in Rani before heading to New Delhi.

He noted that the party is nearing completion of the candidate list and anticipates announcing the names primarily in one go.

“The list will be released as a single document, although there may be a few exceptions if one or two constituencies remain unresolved,” the Chief Minister stated.

Sarma also confirmed his travel to the national capital later that day to engage in discussions regarding the candidate selection process.

“I will be leaving for Delhi today,” he mentioned, indicating that this trip is related to finalizing the party's candidate list.

When asked about Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi's letter to the party's leadership expressing concerns over internal matters, Sarma sharply criticized the opposition party.

“No Hindu leader can remain in Congress. The environment is not conducive. By 2030, it will be impossible to find a Hindu leader in the party. Gradually, they will all depart,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister added that he has not yet communicated with Bordoloi, who is currently serving as a Member of Parliament.

“I haven't spoken to Bordoloi yet because he is a sitting MP. He risks losing his seat if he joins the BJP. Therefore, I have set 2029 as a timeline for him,” Sarma explained.

He further criticized the Congress's internal dynamics, claiming that the party's situation has worsened since the new president took office.

“The atmosphere within Congress is quite poor. Since the new president's appointment, his approach has diverged from public sentiment. People are dissatisfied,” Sarma remarked.

These comments arise amid ongoing controversy within the Congress regarding the Lahorighat Assembly ticket, as Bordoloi has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the party leadership over this issue and has threatened to leave if it remains unresolved.

Reports indicate that the Congress MP has traveled to New Delhi to address the matter with the party's high command, underscoring the internal strife within the party as the Assembly elections approach.
