New Delhi: On Tuesday, the BJP criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly holding Parliament hostage due to his 'whimsical and unruly behavior.' The party claims that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha is not interested in engaging in meaningful discussions within the House.
During a press briefing at the BJP headquarters, spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi stated that the government has addressed several of Gandhi's concerns regarding NEET and student issues. He mentioned that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is prepared to deliver a comprehensive statement in Parliament, yet Gandhi appears to be 'avoiding' the situation.
Trivedi remarked, 'Everyone has witnessed how he leaves the House during sessions and travels abroad afterward. Before you leave, muster the courage to hear Home Minister Amit Shah's statement.'
These comments followed the government's announcement that Shah would respond to a debate concerning student protests across the nation. However, the Congress party has made it clear that their protests in Parliament will persist until Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologizes for police actions against demonstrators and the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Gandhi has also expressed that the public is uninterested in Shah's views on 'general topics' and is more concerned about whether he authorized the use of pellet guns against protesting students.
Trivedi criticized Gandhi further, stating, 'I doubt our Constitution's framers could have envisioned the highest legislative body being held hostage by a spoiled prince acting on whims.'
He pointed out that Gandhi's demands have been met one after another, including changes to NEET examination rules and the establishment of stricter laws, yet he continues to present new demands.
Trivedi challenged Gandhi to engage in parliamentary debates rather than disrupt proceedings, asserting that the government is ready to address every issue in detail.
'Do not be afraid. Do not flee. We want to make it clear: do not run away from the House. We challenge you to stay and listen. You should hear the discussions in the House before heading to Ranchi. But it seems you are neither going to Ranchi nor listening in the House,' he stated, referencing ongoing student protests in Jharkhand.
He highlighted Gandhi's notable silence regarding the student protests in Jharkhand, where Congress is part of the ruling coalition.
'Your government is in Jharkhand. It is unprecedented to see those in power siding with the students. If you truly support them, take immediate action,' he urged.
Trivedi clarified that the protests by students in Jharkhand are not about a paper leak but are demanding a CBI investigation into allegations of corruption and manipulation in recruitment processes.
In a jab at Gandhi, Trivedi remarked on the unpredictability of his actions in Parliament, saying, 'What Rahul Gandhi will do is uncertain even to us. I doubt even the Congress Party president could predict his next move. If you were to ask Gandhi himself what he plans for tomorrow's session, I suspect even advanced AI wouldn't be able to provide an answer.'
He accused Gandhi of evading parliamentary responsibilities and traveling abroad after sessions, adding, 'I would like to remind him that it is likely he will once again flee abroad after the session. But before you do, gather the courage to listen to Home Minister Amit Shah's statement.'
