BJP Secures Victory in Gujarat's Manjalpur By-Election

BJP Maintains Stronghold in Manjalpur

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has successfully retained its dominance in the Manjalpur assembly constituency of Gujarat. The party's candidate, Satendra Bhai Patel, triumphed over his Congress rival, Bhikhabhai Rabari, by a significant margin of 30,630 votes. In the counting of votes, which spanned 20 rounds, Patel garnered 55,481 votes, while Rabari received 24,851 votes. The NOTA option attracted only 2,247 votes, allowing the BJP to secure a decisive victory and maintain control over the assembly seat.

Counting Process and Voter Turnout

The vote counting for the Manjalpur assembly by-election commenced on Monday at 8 AM under strict security measures. The BJP fielded former Vadodara Municipal Corporation councillor Satish Govindbhai Patel, while Congress nominated Bhikhabhai Rabari, who is also the party's vice president in Gujarat and a former minister. A total of 219,000 voters were eligible to cast their votes, including 111,645 men, 107,847 women, and two third-gender voters. Voting took place across 260 polling stations set up at 62 locations.

Election Context and Historical Significance

Voting occurred on July 30, and the Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat reported that the process was peaceful, running from 7 AM to 6 PM without any incidents. However, the voter turnout was notably low at just 37.5%, a stark contrast to the 60.15% turnout during the 2022 Gujarat assembly elections for this seat. This by-election was necessitated by the passing of senior BJP legislator and former minister Yogesh Patel on June 2 after a prolonged illness.

Yogesh Patel's Legacy

Yogesh Patel, who served as a BJP legislator for eight terms, represented the Raopura assembly seat five times between 1990 and 2007. Following the delimitation, he contested from the newly formed Manjalpur seat, winning in 2012, 2017, and 2022, achieving eight consecutive victories in the Gujarat assembly over 36 years. The results of the Manjalpur by-election are unlikely to impact the BJP's strength; however, it will be interesting to observe how Congress challenges the BJP in this stronghold of Vadodara.
