BJP Secures Major Victory in West Bengal By-Election
Prime Minister Modi Celebrates BJP's Triumph
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the BJP's impressive win in the Falta assembly by-election in West Bengal. This constituency has long been considered a stronghold of the TMC, yet the BJP defeated the Trinamool Congress by over 100,000 votes. Debangshu Panda of the BJP received 149,666 votes, significantly outpacing CPI(M) candidate Shambhu Nath Kurmi, who garnered 109,021 votes. Kurmi's total was 40,645, while Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq Molla finished third with 10,084 votes.
TMC Faces Significant Setback
TMC's candidate Jahangir Khan fell to fourth place with only 7,783 votes, losing his deposit. This result is a major blow to the ruling party, which has held this seat since 2011. The BJP secured 71.2% of the votes in this by-election, a substantial increase from the 36.75% it received in 2021, while TMC's share plummeted to 3.7%.
Modi's Remarks on the Election Outcome
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described the election results as a victory for democracy and a mandate from the people of West Bengal for the BJP. He congratulated Debangshu Panda for winning by a record margin, stating, "The people of Falta have made their decision! This is a victory for democracy and a defeat for threats." Modi emphasized that this reflects the unwavering trust of the people in the BJP, who recognize the party's efforts across various sectors.
Election Commission's Intervention
The by-election has altered the political landscape significantly. Following complaints regarding the use of items like perfume and adhesive tape on EVMs during the April 29 elections, the Election Commission ordered a re-vote at all 285 booths on May 21, conducted under strict security.
A New Beginning, Says Official
Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister, referred to the election outcome as evidence that voters were finally able to exercise their rights freely. He expressed gratitude to the people of Falta for giving the BJP a "tremendous mandate," surpassing their target of 100,000 votes. Adhikari accused the TMC of becoming a "mafia company" that misused government machinery and promoted a culture of intimidation.
Looking Ahead
Without naming anyone directly, Adhikari indirectly targeted TMC's general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, labeling him a "fraud" who suddenly appeared and claimed leadership. He asserted that this result is just the beginning, indicating that the people of West Bengal are prepared to completely reject the TMC. Following the results, Panda expressed his gratitude to the residents of Falta for their support, stating, "People have been able to vote freely and fairly."
