BJP's Protest in Chennai
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu organized a protest in Chennai on June 18, condemning issues such as sexual harassment against women and children, crimes against minors, and the deteriorating law and order situation. The demonstration was led by the state president of the BJP, Nainar Nagendran, and included key figures such as Arvind Menon, the party's in-charge for Tamil Nadu, senior leader Tamilisai Soundararajan, and Vellore Ibrahim, the secretary of the national minority wing, along with state vice presidents, secretaries, district heads, party officials, and local citizens.
Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans against the TVK government, covering their mouths with black cloth. Addressing the crowd, Nainar Nagendran emphasized that the protest was not politically motivated but aimed at ensuring the safety of women. He highlighted a horrific incident in Gummidipoondi where a child was brutally tortured and killed, attributing such crimes to the dangers posed by drugs and narcotics.
Nagendran compared the previous DMK government with the current TVK administration, stating that the Chief Minister remains oblivious to the ongoing issues. He expressed disbelief that the Chief Minister was unaware of how they won the elections, referencing a case of sexual assault on a 10-year-old boy near Coimbatore, where no action was taken even after ministers met with the victim.
Criticizing the government's approach to handling sexual violence, Nagendran stated that under the TVK government, women face both physical and mental sexual violence, exacerbated by drug abuse. He remarked that while they are not demanding the Chief Minister's resignation solely for this reason, if he continues to fail in condemning these incidents and taking action, he should consider stepping down. He warned that this protest is just the beginning and urged the government not to force them to take further action.
