BJP's Response to the Bill's Defeat
Following the failure of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill aimed at implementing women's reservation in the Lok Sabha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized widespread protests on Saturday. The bill was defeated due to the India coalition's refusal to support the delimitation process, which required a two-thirds majority for passage. The Congress party and other opposition groups voted against the bill, resulting in 230 members opposing the amendment. The BJP accused Congress of adopting an anti-women stance.
Congress Clarifies Its Position
The Congress party clarified that it does not oppose women's reservation but is against the delimitation proposal that would increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 815. They argue that this delimitation would weaken representation for southern states in the lower house. BJP MP Hema Malini, participating in the protests, stated that the bill was not allowed to pass, leading to their demonstration. Women across the country are uniting for this cause. Despite our efforts, the bill was not passed yesterday, and we are extremely frustrated. Women nationwide are protesting.
Reactions from BJP Leaders
BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks in the Lok Sabha, where he stated that Congress could take credit for the women's reservation bill, but he did not want any credit. However, he noted that Congress ignored the Prime Minister's words and opposed the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. He predicted that women would defeat Congress in the upcoming elections, making them realize their mistake.
Accusations Against the Opposition
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj accused the opposition of betraying women, particularly targeting opposition leader Rahul Gandhi for his actions. She claimed that he stabbed women in the back and aimed to limit their role to just voting. When it came to political representation, he prioritized his interests, resulting in the anger of women. They have betrayed women.
Prime Minister Modi's Upcoming Address
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address the nation tonight at 8:30 PM, where he is expected to criticize the opposition's decision regarding the bill's failure. BJP President Virendra Sachdeva stated that he should definitely address the nation, as Parliament could have made a historic decision yesterday, but Congress and the India coalition blocked it. He believes it will be difficult for the opposition to accept how women's rights have been undermined.
