BJP Announces Candidates for Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Delhi

On Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) revealed its candidate for the mayoral election of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, selecting councillor Pravesh Wahi. For the position of deputy mayor, the party has nominated Monica Pant. Both candidates are set to submit their nominations today, the final day of the nomination process. Additionally, Jay Bhagwan Yadav and Manish Chadha will also file their nominations for the permanent committee member positions.

Significance of the Permanent Committee

The permanent committee is one of the most influential bodies within the Delhi Municipal Corporation, tasked with financial approvals and key policy decisions. Elections for the mayor, deputy mayor, and three permanent committee members are scheduled for April 29, with nominations closing at 5 PM today. Currently, the BJP holds 123 seats in the 250-member municipal council, while the Aam Aadmi Party has 100 councillors, the Indraprastha Development Party has 15, Congress has nine, and there are two independents along with one vacant seat.

Electoral Dynamics and AAP's Position

This year's mayoral election will involve an electoral college of 273 votes, comprising 249 councillors, 14 legislators appointed by the Delhi Assembly, seven Lok Sabha MPs, and three Rajya Sabha members. A candidate needs 137 votes to secure victory. The Aam Aadmi Party has announced that its councillor Jalaj Kumar Chaudhary from Shalimar Bagh has filed for the permanent committee, although the party has opted not to contest the mayoral election. Saurabh Bhardwaj, the president of the Delhi Aam Aadmi Party, confirmed the party's decision to abstain from the mayoral race just a day before the nomination deadline.
