Guwahati, Feb 24: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the ruling BJP is close to finalizing candidates for 80 constituencies in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, pending approval from the party's central leadership.

During a press conference on Monday, Sarma confirmed that Bhupen Borah will receive a BJP ticket for the elections.

“We are committed to selecting a strong candidate for Bihpuria. Bhupen Borah, a former MLA from the region, will be considered for both Bihpuria and Ranganadi,” he stated.

Sarma dismissed claims of discontent among BJP members regarding Borah's entry into the party.

“We will honor and recognize Bhupen Borah's contributions. As Chief Minister, I assure you that the decision regarding his ticket has been made,” he emphasized.

He also mentioned that discussions regarding a potential alliance between the Congress and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) are nearing completion.

According to Sarma, 'rebel' Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Basanta Das, and Sashi Kanta Das are expected to join the BJP soon.

When questioned about the possibility of additional Congress MLAs joining the BJP, he replied, “We currently have no vacancies for new candidates.”

However, he noted that several Hindu leaders from the Congress are likely to switch to the BJP in the near future.

Additionally, Sarma mentioned that the Sonai MLA is set to join the AGP after departing from the AIUDF, having reached an agreement on this matter.

He refuted rumors regarding Congress MLA Reki-buddin Ahmed joining the BJP, stating, “We have no connection with him. Such rumors may have originated from within Congress by someone unhappy about not receiving a ticket. Can anyone win from the Chamaria constituency by aligning with the AGP or the BJP?”
