Disturbing Discovery at Bhograi Police Station

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking turn of events, BJP MP and former Union Minister Pratap Chandra Sarangi intervened during an unexpected visit to the Bhograi police station in Balasore district, where he discovered a man who had been held inhumanely in iron shackles for two days.

The individual, identified as Kartika Chandra Bhol from Jayarampur village, was reportedly working as a sound system operator for Manmath Dutta, a local resident. Tensions arose when the two exchanged motorcycles earlier this year, leading to a dispute over the return of the bike and outstanding wages.

On May 20, Manmath's wife, Jayanti Dutta, filed a complaint claiming that Kartika had stolen their motorcycle. The police acted on this complaint, seizing the bike but failing to locate Kartika.

On June 17, Kartika and his wife visited the police station to reclaim the motorcycle. However, they were met with hostility, resulting in the police detaining Kartika while sending his wife home.

Alarmed by the news of her husband's condition, Kartika's wife, accompanied by a relative, sought out MP Sarangi, who was visiting the area. Upon hearing their story, Sarangi promptly went to the police station and freed Kartika.

During the rescue, Sarangi highlighted the appalling treatment Kartika endured, sharing evidence with the District Superintendent of Police via video call. He criticized the Bhograi police for their barbaric practices, noting that this was not the first instance of such behavior. Sarangi expressed concern over the police's tendency to detain individuals for minor offenses while allowing serious criminals to go free, emphasizing that Kartika's detention was unlawful as no formal case had been registered against him.

In response to the incident, Odisha's Director General of Police, Y.B. Khurania, suspended the Inspector In-Charge of Bhograi police station for serious misconduct and failure to perform duties. The suspension order stated that Sri Sriballav Sahu would be placed on immediate suspension pending disciplinary proceedings.
