BJP MP Criticizes Emergency Imposed by Indira Gandhi's Government
Condemnation of the Emergency Period
BJP Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey has strongly condemned the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which ended on March 21, 1977. In a post titled 'A Dark Chapter of Congress,' Dubey characterized the Emergency as a time marked by oppressive policies, the murder of democracy, and violations of civil rights. He noted that on this very day, March 21, 1977, the Emergency was lifted due to the oppressive measures and the suppression of democracy and civil liberties by Indira Gandhi. He highlighted that on March 20, 1977, the public brought down the arrogance of the Gandhi family, leading to Indira Gandhi's electoral defeat.
Impact of the Emergency
Dubey emphasized the severe consequences of the Emergency, stating that millions were imprisoned, and thousands died due to police brutality or torture. He mentioned that forced sterilizations affected one crore individuals. He also referred to the 42nd Constitutional Amendment, which extended the Lok Sabha's term to six years and granted immunity to the President and Prime Minister from legal proceedings. Furthermore, he pointed out that fundamental rights were suspended, and the press was silenced, resulting in significant alterations to the original Constitution established by Babasaheb.
Sharing Historical Evidence
Along with his post, Dubey shared an image of the Government of India Gazette, which listed the constitutional amendments enacted during the Emergency, highlighting provisions that undermined judicial review and institutional checks. He also referenced the mass sterilization and population control campaigns initiated by Indira Gandhi's administration. On March 19, Dubey had previously identified the Congress party as the root cause of several national issues, particularly emphasizing allegations of illegal immigration.
Political Reflections
In an exclusive interview with a news media outlet, he expressed that after reading various books and observing the political landscape, he is personally convinced that the current issues facing the nation, which the opposition is amplifying, stem from the Nehru-Gandhi family or the Congress party. This conviction led him to initiate a series titled 'A Dark Chapter of Congress,' which commenced on the 17th.
