Morigaon, July 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Morigaon organized a significant public gathering on Friday to gear up for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election and the Tiwa Autonomous Council election.
Despite the sweltering heat, over 5,000 party leaders and supporters from the Morigaon constituency assembled at Morigaon Bihutoli, marking the commencement of their election campaign. The event kicked off with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp and the singing of the national song, Vande Mataram.
Ramakanta Deori, the Morigaon MLA and chief speaker, addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude for being elected for a third term, attributing his success to the people's support. He urged voters to achieve a record turnout in the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election and called on the Morigaon populace to help the BJP secure 90,000 more votes than the Congress candidate, aiming for a new electoral milestone.
Regarding the Tiwa Autonomous Council election, Deori criticized a “vested group” for corrupt practices that have harmed the council's reputation, which is meant to represent the Tiwa community's aspirations. He noted that although the council's constitutional tenure had been extended by six months, the current authorities were seeking another extension through appeals to ministers.
Deori mentioned discussions with the Chief Minister, who confirmed that no further extensions would be granted and that elections for the Tiwa Autonomous Council would occur soon. He emphasized that the BJP would field candidates of integrity for the council election to restore its dignity and credibility, urging the identification of individuals involved in conspiracies within the current council.
BJP youth leader and president of the Morigaon District Other Backward Classes (OBC) Morcha, Shivaji Deka, commented on the alleged opposition faced by Deori from 11 BJP leaders during the last Assembly election, suggesting that these individuals acted like Congress supporters while claiming to be BJP members in other regions.
Morigaon District BJP president Ram Prasad Sarkar and District Co-Incharge Arjun Majumdar also spoke at the event, encouraging party workers to secure victories in the forthcoming elections.
District Secretary Jitu Bora welcomed attendees and highlighted recent developmental projects, such as the reopening of long-closed bus terminals in Morigaon town and the inauguration of a modern mini stadium at Manipur by MLA Ramakanta Deori.
Notable attendees included Morigaon Zila Parishad President Pranati Kalita Deka, Morigaon Municipal Board Chairman Jogesh Tamuli, and various other local leaders and party officials. Morigaon Mandal BJP president Pratap Bordoloi played a crucial role in organizing the successful event, which featured vibrant cultural performances by Tiwa, Bodo, and Bihu dance troupes, captivating the audience.
