Silchar, May 4: The initial results from Cachar district indicate a strong performance by the BJP, with Minister Kaushik Rai significantly increasing his lead in the Lakhipur Assembly constituency following the second round of counting.

As per the latest updates, Rai has garnered 17,548 votes, while Congress candidate Dr. M. Shanti Kumar Singha trails far behind with only 1,303 votes. The NOTA option has received 538 votes thus far.

In Udharbond, a similar pattern is emerging, where BJP's Rajdeep Goala has taken a commanding lead with 11,964 votes, leaving Congress's Ajit Singh with 5,675 votes, further indicating the ruling party's dominance.

Conversely, the Silchar constituency has turned into a closely contested race. After the first round, Congress candidate Abhijit Paul is ahead with 5,079 votes, while BJP's former MP Rajdeep Roy follows with 4,236 votes.

The slim margin suggests an early advantage for Congress, but with several rounds of counting remaining, the outcome is still uncertain.

Earlier today, Lakhipur set a positive tone for the BJP, as Rai established a solid lead right from the first round. His continued success in subsequent rounds has further strengthened the party's position.

Officials have noted that counting is ongoing across various constituencies, and complete round-wise results are yet to be finalized.

The counting process has been relatively slow up to this point. Roy commented on the initial delays, stating that such occurrences are typical.

“There is often some inertia at the start, especially with a large number of EVMs. The pace should improve as we progress,” he remarked, expressing optimism about his party's chances.

Counting is being conducted under strict security measures, despite the overcast weather and intermittent rain since morning.

Officials and staff have been diligently performing their duties, although one counting staff member reportedly fell ill and was taken to the hospital; however, no significant disruptions have been reported.

Senior officials, including Cachar District Commissioner Ayush Garg and Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjib Kumar Saikia, are present at the counting center to supervise the proceedings.

Representatives from various political parties are also stationed outside the venue, eagerly awaiting clearer trends in the coming hours.
