BJP MLAs Meet to Discuss Government Formation
Imphal, May 31: Following a meeting held by ruling MLAs at the residence of former Forest Minister and Thongju MLA Thongam Biswajit Singh on Friday evening, BJP legislators gathered again on Saturday at their party office in Keishampat.
During this meeting, they conferred with state BJP president A Sharda Devi regarding the establishment of a new government in light of the ongoing flash floods affecting the region.
The specifics of the closed-door meeting on Friday were not made public, and the MLAs in attendance refrained from sharing any details. However, Wangjing-Tentha MLA Paonam Brojen confirmed that Saturday's discussions were focused on government formation.
Among the BJP MLAs who reportedly attended the Friday meeting were Th. Biswajit (Thongju), Y. Khemchand (Singjamei), K. Govindas (Bishnupur), Dr. S. Ranjan (Konthoujam), L. Susindro (Khurai), Karam Shyam (Langthabal), P. Brojen (Wangjing-Tentha), H. Dingo (Sekmai), Th. Radheshyam (Heirok), Y. Radheshyam (Hiyanglam), Th. Raghumani (Uripok), S. Kebi (Naoriya Pakhanglakpa), S. S. Olish (Chandel), S. Kujakeshwor (Patsoi), Kh. Ibomcha (Lamlai), L. Rameshwar (Keirao), S. Premchandra (Kumbi), T. Robindro (Thanga), Dinganglung Gangmei (Nungba), K. Robindro (Mayang Imphal), S. Rajen (Lamshang), and Usham Deben (Wabagai).
Earlier, on May 28, a group of ten ruling MLAs met with the Governor of Manipur to convey their intention to establish a popular government in the state.
“We, the 44 MLAs, have expressed our willingness to form the government in accordance with the people's wishes and the current circumstances. We also deliberated on various strategies to address the ongoing crisis in the state,” stated Thokchom Radheshyam, MLA of Heirok, following the meeting with the Governor.
Th. Radheshyam previously held the position of Education Minister during Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s first term.
The ten MLAs who met with the Governor comprised seven from the BJP, two from the National People’s Party (NPP), and one Independent.
Since February 13, Manipur has been under President’s Rule after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, and the ruling BJP was unable to appoint a successor.
In the recent Assembly elections, the BJP achieved a significant victory, winning 32 out of 60 seats. The NPP emerged as the second-largest party with 7 seats, while Congress and NPF secured 5 seats each. The newly formed Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) won 2 seats, and 3 Independents were elected.
