Proposal to Rename Delhi
During the budget session of the assembly on Friday, a BJP legislator advocated for renaming Delhi to Indraprastha. Poonam Sharma, the BJP representative from Wazirpur, presented her proposal through a special mention in the house, asserting that this change would help the city reconnect with its historical roots. She urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to pass a resolution in the assembly to rename Delhi and forward it to the central government for approval.
Cultural Renaissance
Sharma emphasized that changing the name of the national capital would mark a significant chapter in the cultural renaissance of the country. This demand echoes a previous request made by BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk, who wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the same issue. Furthermore, Sharma highlighted that Delhi's glorious past is linked to the Mahabharata era, with substantial cultural and historical evidence indicating that the city was originally known as Indraprastha, with the name Delhi being adopted much later. She stated that the name Indraprastha would remind us of an era when our nation was renowned as the land of golden birds, and this new name would provide the country with a remarkable cultural identity.
Modern Infrastructure and Cultural Heritage
Sharma reiterated that the Rekha Gupta administration believes that Delhi should not only have modern infrastructure but also reflect the glory of Sanatan Dharma. Following the release of a video by Delhi's minister Pravesh Sahib Singh showcasing the official residence of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta claimed on Thursday that this 'Sheesh Mahal' is not just a building but a living testament to corruption, arrogance, and betrayal of public trust. Pravesh Sahib Singh shared a video titled 'Dhurandhar 3' on social media, labeling Kejriwal as the 'Rahman Dacoit' of Delhi.
