Allegations Against IUML's Influence

BJP legislator V. Muraleedharan claimed on Thursday that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is attempting to exert control over the newly formed Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala. He cited delays in the allocation of departments as evidence of pressure from coalition partners. Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Muraleedharan questioned the functioning of the government led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, noting that the allocation of departments took three days after the cabinet was sworn in.

He pointed out that the delay in department allocation following the cabinet formation and oath-taking raised concerns. According to media reports, this delay was attributed to demands made by the IUML, the main ally in the UDF coalition, which the Chief Minister had to accommodate. There are strong indications that the IUML is trying to gain control over the government, with the Chief Minister allegedly acting on their directives.

Muraleedharan emphasized the importance of equal representation for all sections of society in a democratic system, asserting that no community should feel marginalized. He noted that out of the 21 ministers in the government, 12 belong to minority communities. The presence of only nine ministers from the majority community does not imply their neglect, he argued. The BJP leader also called for the withdrawal of cases against Sabarimala devotees who protested against the entry of menstruating women into the hill temple, as well as cases related to the movement against the SilverLine project.

He criticized the CPI(M) for opposing the singing of 'Vande Mataram' during the oath-taking ceremony, questioning which words they believe contradict the country's secularism and the basis for their opposition. Muraleedharan also raised concerns about the recent price hike of milk announced by Milma, urging the government to clarify whose interests they are protecting, as this increase adversely affects the poor and common people.
