BJP Leader Defends Removal of Periyar's Image at NDA Rally in Madurai
Controversy Surrounds Image Removal at NDA Rally
On Monday, Tamilisai Soundararajan, a prominent BJP leader, justified the removal of E.V. Ramasamy Periyar's image from the entrance of an NDA rally in Madurai. She stated that this action reflects the organizers' intent to honor Hindu sentiments. While addressing the issue, Soundararajan questioned the ideological stance of the DMK, pointing out that despite claiming that 80% of its members are Hindus, images of Hindu deities like Lord Murugan and Goddess Kali are conspicuously absent from party events.
Ideological Representation in Event Imagery
Soundararajan further elaborated that the choice of images displayed at events is indicative of the organizers' ideology, asserting that there is nothing to conceal in this regard. Speaking to reporters, she challenged the DMK's claims of inclusivity, asking why they do not visit Hindu temples if they genuinely respect all beliefs. She reiterated that if the DMK's membership is predominantly Hindu, the absence of images of deities at their conferences raises questions about their true representation.
PM Modi's Visit to Arulmigu Subramanya Swamy Temple
The BJP leader also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for visiting the Arulmigu Subramanya Swamy Temple in Madurai. This visit followed a ruling by the Madras High Court allowing devotees to light lamps at the temple's Dipa Thoon, located atop the Tirupurankundram hill. Soundararajan emphasized that the controversy surrounding Hindu sentiments is far from resolved, as many feel marginalized and hurt. She recounted a mother's experience of being unable to light a lamp at the Murugan temple, highlighting Modi's supportive response, where he acknowledged the plight of sidelined Hindus.
Upcoming Elections and Political Dynamics
Looking ahead, Soundararajan mentioned that elections for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly are set to take place in the first half of 2026. She noted that the coalition led by MK Stalin is expected to introduce a 'Dravidian Model 2.0' to challenge the BJP-AIADMK alliance. The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay's party, Tamilga Vetttri Kazhagam (TVK), could potentially transform the Tamil Nadu elections into a triangular contest.
