BJP's Strategic Meeting in Guwahati

Guwahati, Nov 2: The Assam branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened on Monday to assess its readiness for a series of forthcoming elections for autonomous councils and municipal bodies. The meeting, led by state president Dilip Saikia, included discussions with the party's newly appointed in-charge and co-in-charges in Guwahati.

Taking place at Vajpayee Bhawan, the party's headquarters in Basistha, the focus was on bolstering the organization ahead of elections for the Mising Autonomous Council, Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, Tiwa Autonomous Council, Moran-Matak Autonomous Council, and various municipal boards set for next month.

Saikia stated, “We have made comprehensive preparations for these elections. We also addressed the council elections and matters related to the Sixth Schedule areas of Karbi Anglong.”

He emphasized the importance of the meeting for the state unit, highlighting that BJP national president Nitin Nabin had assigned three senior leaders to oversee the party's operations in Assam.

Former Bihar Cabinet Minister Mangal Pandey has been designated as the BJP's in-charge for Assam, with Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland and Manoj Tigga from Alipurduar appointed as co-in-charges.

The discussions also aimed at enhancing the party's grassroots network, broadening its political influence, and gearing up for the upcoming campaign titled “Gantantra Bachao, Arajakota Hatao.”

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed his support for the new appointments, stating that he is optimistic about the leadership team’s ability to strengthen the party's presence in Assam.

“The BJP is pleased with Pandey's appointment as in-charge, along with the two co-in-charges. I am confident that the party's influence will continue to grow in the near future,” Sonowal remarked.

This organizational review follows a meeting held by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with representatives from the Moran, Matak, Mising, and Sonowal-Kachari communities on October 28.

During that meeting, discussions revolved around land rights and unresolved settlement cases, including land allocation in tribal regions, with proposals for up to 50 bighas per family and a review of pending applications under Mission Basundhara 4.0.

Representatives from the All Assam Matak Students’ Union also voiced their demands for elections to the Matak Autonomous Council and for Scheduled Tribe status for their community.

The meeting on Monday was attended by state office-bearers, district presidents, district in-charges and co-in-charges, along with presidents of various party morchas.
