BJP's Organizational Focus

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently concentrating on organizational matters, particularly the selection of its next national president. Although no official announcement has been made yet, sources indicate that internal discussions are ongoing, with a formal process expected to commence by mid-June. The party has completed organizational elections in most states, which is a necessary prerequisite under its constitution before electing the new national president.

Recent Developments in Uttar Pradesh

The recent announcement of 70 district presidents in Uttar Pradesh has fueled speculation that the central leadership may soon make a decision regarding the party presidency. However, the process has faced some delays due to the terrorist attack that occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. Reportedly, party sources have suggested that before making a national-level appointment, the BJP may finalize new state unit presidents in key states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Leadership Structure Considerations

Currently, the leadership structure in Madhya Pradesh includes an OBC chief minister and a Brahmin state president, a balance that has been effective for the party thus far. However, sources indicate that the party is contemplating appointing a tribal leader as the state head, as representation of tribal communities in both state and national leadership is relatively low. In Uttarakhand, a Brahmin leader is reportedly a frontrunner for the state president position, although no official confirmation has been provided.

Key Contenders for the Presidency

Three prominent names are emerging in the race for the BJP presidency. Dharmendra Pradhan, a leading OBC figure from Odisha and a central minister known for his organizational skills and close ties to the central leadership, is a significant contender. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and now a central minister, is also seen as a strong candidate due to his grassroots experience. Additionally, Manohar Lal Khattar, who recently transitioned from the role of Haryana Chief Minister to the central cabinet, represents continuity and administrative experience, making him one of the top three names the BJP may consider.
