The recent Zila Parishad elections in Mandi district have sent a strong political signal, with candidates backed by the BJP achieving a remarkable victory throughout the area, resulting in substantial losses for several notable Congress figures and their political dynasties.
This election cycle was marked by a series of unexpected defeats, making it one of the most scrutinized local body elections in recent memory. Candidates supported by the BJP gained a significant lead in all 36 Zila Parishad constituencies, showcasing the party's robust grassroots influence in a region deemed politically vital for Himachal Pradesh.
A major upset occurred in the Kotli constituency, where Champa Thakur, the President of the Mandi District Congress Committee, faced a significant defeat. The BJP's Hemlata triumphed with a margin of 2,464 votes, garnering 8,659 votes compared to Thakur's 6,195.
This loss is particularly noteworthy considering Thakur's political background. As the daughter of former Himachal Pradesh minister Kaul Singh Thakur, she had previously secured four consecutive Zila Parishad victories from various constituencies and served as Chairperson of the Mandi Zila Parishad. Additionally, she has contested the Mandi Sadar Assembly seat twice as a Congress candidate.
Another significant loss for a prominent political family occurred in the Tihra constituency of the Dharampur Assembly segment, where Vandana Guleria, daughter of former BJP minister Mahender Singh Thakur, was narrowly defeated by just 47 votes. The close result prompted calls for a recount during the tallying process, but the final outcome remained unchanged.
In the Sari constituency (Ward No. 32), known for its competitive nature, BJP-backed candidate Reena Thakur achieved a decisive victory, defeating her closest opponent by nearly 1,700 votes.
The Congress party found limited success in Salapad, where Mohit Thakur, nephew of former Congress MLA Sohan Lal Thakur, won as a Congress-supported candidate.
Among the standout victories was that of Paras Ram, a dedicated BJP worker and party volunteer, who overcame a strong Congress-backed opponent by a margin of 1,416 votes to secure a Zila Parishad seat. His win is seen as a testament to the BJP's organizational strength and connection with the grassroots.
In Seraj, the home constituency of former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, BJP-backed candidates swept all four Zila Parishad seats with comfortable margins, further solidifying the party's dominance in the area.
The results were also a setback for Congress in Seraj, with Youth Congress General Secretary Tarun Thakur, son of senior Congress leader Chet Ram Thakur, losing, along with Congress leader Mahender Thakur.
Political analysts regard the Mandi results as particularly significant due to the district's pivotal role in Himachal Pradesh's political landscape. The outcome underscores the BJP's sustained grassroots strength while raising alarms for Congress, which struggled to maintain several key strongholds despite fielding candidates from established political families.
At the state level, BJP-backed candidates have also shown strong performance in the Zila Parishad elections. Out of 251 Zila Parishad seats across Himachal Pradesh, candidates supported by the BJP have won over 136 seats, giving the party a decisive advantage in the local body elections.
The Mandi election results, characterized by the defeat of several high-profile candidates and a sweeping performance by BJP-backed contenders, are likely to be seen as one of the most politically significant outcomes of the 2026 local body elections in Himachal Pradesh.
