BJP Demands NHRC Action Over Violent Assault on Odisha Youth in Tamil Nadu
BJP Calls for NHRC Intervention
The Tamil Nadu branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appealed to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take immediate notice of a violent attack on a 20-year-old man from Odisha, labeling it a grave infringement of human rights and indicative of escalating lawlessness in the region.
The victim, identified as K. Suraj from Kalahandi district, was reportedly assaulted on December 27 near the Tiruttani railway station by four minors, each approximately 17 years old.
Initial reports indicate that Suraj had traveled to Chennai due to a family conflict and was on a suburban train when the attackers allegedly threatened him and forced him off.
He was subsequently taken to a secluded area near the old railway quarters, where he endured a brutal beating with sickles, with the assailants reportedly recording the incident on their phones.
Suraj suffered significant injuries to his head, face, and hands and was initially treated at Tiruttani Government Hospital before being transferred to Tiruvallur Government Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Law enforcement later apprehended the four juveniles near the Gangai Amman temple and seized the weapons used in the assault.
A case has been filed under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted murder. Three of the suspects have been placed in a juvenile facility, while one was released into parental custody.
North Zone Inspector General of Police Asra Garg mentioned that early investigations indicate the attack was motivated by a personal dispute rather than regional or linguistic tensions.
He also dismissed rumors regarding the victim's death as unfounded and stated that inquiries are ongoing to determine if the assailants were under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the incident.
In a formal request to the NHRC, BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad expressed serious concerns about the case's management.
The complaint points out alleged failures in providing immediate psychological assistance to the victim, questions the adequacy of medical and forensic responses, and highlights the growing issue of juvenile violence exacerbated by substance abuse and the glorification of violence on social media.
The BJP has urged the NHRC to initiate an independent and thorough investigation, ensure proper compensation and rehabilitation for the victim, and recommend systemic changes to avert similar occurrences in the future.
The party emphasized that such incidents jeopardize the safety of migrant workers and violate the constitutional guarantees of dignity, equality, and protection for all citizens.
