Demolition Sparks Controversy
The BJP has condemned the ruling Trinamool Congress for demolishing the residence of renowned 20th-century painter Abanindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan, defying municipal orders. The party labeled this act as an assault on history, heritage, and Hindu cultural identity. Abanindranath was the nephew of the illustrious poet Rabindranath Tagore. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP's IT cell and co-in-charge for Bengal, expressed on social media that the home of Abanindranath, a significant figure in Indian art, is being destroyed. He emphasized that this is not merely a building being torn down; it represents a broader attack on our national sentiment and cultural legacy, all under the guise of development.
Legacy Under Threat
Abanindranath's son, Alokendranath Tagore, had purchased the house where the great artist lived, leading to the area being referred to as 'Abanpalli' in his honor. However, this legacy is now being erased, disrespected, and destroyed. The Bolpur municipality had previously issued an order to preserve the historical structure, yet local authorities proceeded with the demolition. The house was built by Alokendranath Tagore, who resided there for several years before the Tagore family sold the property.
Political Fallout
The property was sold to an individual who attempted to demolish it a few months ago, but the Bolpur administration intervened to prevent this. Despite the municipal order, the house was demolished on Monday. After receiving reports of the destruction, the municipality attempted to intervene, but the damage had already been done. The BJP has launched a fierce attack on the Mamata Banerjee government, accusing it of disrespecting the state's historical and cultural heritage.
Cultural Icons Under Siege
Today, both Hindus and their most revered cultural icon, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, find themselves under siege — not just in Bangladesh, but in West Bengal itself.
