BJP Targets Opposition Over Spelling Error

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took aim at the opposition on Thursday, highlighting a spelling mistake in a banner displayed by the opposition alliance in Parliament. The party remarked that those who cannot even spell 'democracy' correctly are now attempting to lecture others on democratic principles. The protest was led by several MPs from the opposition's India bloc, including Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), and party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. They gathered in the Parliament complex to oppose the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in the election-bound state of Bihar.

Standing on the steps of the Makar Gate of Parliament, they displayed a large banner reading "SIR - Attack on Democracy." During the protest, they chanted slogans such as "Save Democracy" and "Stop Vote Ban." Amit Malviya, head of the BJP's IT department, mocked the India bloc for the misspelling of the Hindi word for democracy on their protest banner. Sharing his criticism, Malviya wrote in Hindi, "It is democracy, not लोकतंत् र."

The BJP also shared an image of the protest, targeting the opposition by stating, "Those who cannot write 'democracy' are now trying to teach others about it." Joining in the attack, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala criticized the Congress party, accusing it of being more aligned with dynastic politics and authoritarianism. He posted on X, "The Congress cannot be blamed. They can neither write 'democracy' nor can they save it. They believe in family rule and emergencies! Surely, they can write and save it."
