BJP Criticizes Himachal Government for Tax Burden on Tourism
BJP's Concerns Over Himachal Pradesh's Tax Policies
In a recent statement, Sanjay Sharma, the spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Himachal Pradesh, launched a fierce critique of the state government, led by Sukhu. He accused the administration of turning Himachal Pradesh into a 'Tax State' rather than fostering a tourism-friendly environment. Sharma claimed that the current government is more interested in imposing heavy taxes on both residents and tourists than in promoting development, which he argues has stagnated.
Sharma highlighted the government's recent decision to impose steep entry fees on popular trekking paths like Triund and high vehicle charges. He sarcastically suggested that the administration might soon consider charging pedestrians for walking on public roads in key tourist areas such as Shimla Mall Road, Manali Mall Road, Mandi, Solan, Kullu, Chamba Chaugan, and Dharamshala-McLeodganj.
He emphasized that tourism is vital to Himachal's economy, and the introduction of new fees at various locations is likely to deter visitors. 'The government that once promised a 'system change' has merely resorted to imposing new taxes. Charging individuals for accessing markets and public areas resembles a modern-day 'Jaziya tax,' which threatens to undermine tourism and harm local businesses and residents,' Sharma stated.
In a strong warning, the BJP spokesperson asserted that if the government fails to retract these 'anti-people taxes and fees,' the party will mobilize for protests. He cautioned that the public would respond decisively to the government's exploitative financial measures.
