BJP's Demand for Voter List Revision

Guwahati, Jan 8: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Assam, similar to initiatives being implemented in various other States and Union Territories by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

State BJP president Dilip Saikia expressed support for the SIR being conducted elsewhere, emphasizing its necessity in Assam to ensure an accurate voter list. He stated that this process would help retain only the names of legitimate Indian citizens while removing those of suspected individuals.

Saikia highlighted the importance of a precise voter list for the democratic electoral process, insisting on the urgency of implementing SIR in Assam. Currently, only a Special Revision (SR) is taking place, and he stressed that only genuine citizens should be eligible to vote.

He pointed out discrepancies observed during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update, leading to the rejection of its data by the party. Saikia claimed that many individuals were improperly added to the voter list during the Congress party's governance, asserting that mere inclusion in the list does not equate to being a bona fide citizen of India.

Saikia accused the opposition of allowing numerous ineligible individuals to register, necessitating a cleanup of the voter list. He noted that nationwide revisions have occurred multiple times since Independence, but none have taken place in the last two decades.

When questioned about the ongoing SR 2026 in Assam, Saikia expressed satisfaction with the process but criticized the 'Miya Prem' of Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, suggesting they exploit political narratives for their benefit. He warned that their actions could jeopardize the interests of indigenous people.

Saikia accused opposition parties of engaging in appeasement politics, stating that such tactics do not align with the BJP's principles. He urged the citizens of Assam to remain vigilant against the three Gogois, labeling their statements as immature and indicative of intellectual bankruptcy.

In response to allegations from Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi regarding manipulation of the SR for electoral gain, Saikia dismissed these claims as baseless. He pointed out inconsistencies in the opposition's statements regarding seat management and emphasized that the ECI oversees the SR process.

Saikia reiterated the need for an accurate voter list, noting that deceased individuals and those who have moved away still appear on the rolls. He mentioned that there is an opportunity to address any discrepancies with the ECI following the publication of the draft roll last month.

On the topic of seat-sharing among NDA allies for the upcoming Assembly elections, Saikia confirmed that discussions are ongoing. He expressed the BJP's desire for electoral partnerships with both the BPF and UPPL, acknowledging the challenges ahead.
