BJP's Candidate Selection for Assam Elections

Guwahati, March 22: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revealed its candidates for two additional constituencies in the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026, despite facing discontent from some aspirants who were not awarded party tickets.

The party has nominated Krishna Saha for the Dalgaon LAC and Jiban Gogoi for the Sissibargaon LAC, bringing the total number of seats contested by the BJP to 90.

However, the party experienced a setback when Jayanta Kumar Das resigned from his position, indicating plans to run as an independent candidate for the Dispur constituency.

In a related development, former Katigorah MLA Amar Chand Jain has joined the Congress party at Rajiv Bhavan, while reports suggest that BJP minister Nandita Gorlosa is in talks with the opposition party.

BJP leader and minister Jayanta Mallabaruah visited Silchar on Saturday to meet with fellow MLAs Nihar Ranjan Das (Dholai LAC), Dipayan Chakraborty (Silchar LAC), and Mihir Kanti Som (Udharbond LAC), who have expressed dissatisfaction over being denied party tickets.

“As members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the largest political party globally, we remain united as one family. While some decisions, particularly regarding candidate selection, may not please everyone, our primary identity is that of dedicated karyakartas. We have set aside personal grievances to engage in discussions and have committed to working together for the party's success in the forthcoming Assembly elections,” Mallabaruah stated.

Meanwhile, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has also released its initial list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9.

The AITC has announced candidates for 17 constituencies, including Bilasipara, Jaleswar, Abhayapuri, Bajali, Boko-Chhaygaon, Palasbari, Barkhetri, Goreswar, Mangaldai, Dhemaji (ST), Digboi, Baokhungri, Udharbond, Katigorah, and Sonai. Former Doomdooma MLA Dilip Moran will contest from Makum, while Dulu Ahmed, who previously ran on an AJP ticket and was a Congress member, will contest from Chamaria on an AITC ticket in this election. The party will participate without forming any alliances.

The deadline for filing nominations is March 23, with scrutiny scheduled for the following day. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26.
