BJP Accuses AAP of Election Fraud Following Local Body Polls in Punjab
BJP Claims Election Manipulation by AAP
In the wake of a significant victory for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab's local body elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has raised allegations of electoral fraud. The BJP asserts that the ruling party secured its win through dishonest practices, claiming that the nomination papers for BJP candidates were issued arbitrarily and that there were attacks on citizens. During a press conference in Jalandhar on Saturday, the newly appointed head of the BJP's Punjab unit, Kewal Singh Dhillon, accused AAP of manipulating the election process. He stated that video evidence indicates AAP legislators were involved in intimidating voters and seizing polling booths with the assistance of "criminal elements."
Dhillon Critiques Election Results
Dhillon described the election outcomes as a severe mockery of democracy. He noted that despite facing state-sponsored opposition and muscle power, the BJP managed to perform impressively, securing strong second and third positions in several constituencies. He expressed confidence that by the 2027 assembly elections, the BJP would emerge as the leading political force in Punjab.
Election Results Overview
According to the Punjab State Election Commission (SEC), AAP won 958 out of 1,977 wards in the municipal elections. The Congress party followed in second place with 397 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secured 191 wards. The BJP recorded victories in 172 wards, and independent candidates won 251 wards, with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) winning seven wards.
Kejriwal Thanks Voters
AAP's national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, expressed gratitude to the people of Punjab for the party's remarkable victory. In a video message shared on X (formerly Twitter), he criticized the BJP, claiming that the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has been troubling small businesses, has been completely eradicated from the state.
