Puri Residents Seek Exclusive Access to Jagannath Temple

New Delhi/Puri: On Friday, BJD MP Subhasish Khuntia appealed to the central government to establish a streamlined 'darshan' process specifically for the permanent residents of Puri at the Jagannath Temple, highlighting their difficulties in accessing the shrine due to heavy tourist traffic.

During the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Khuntia emphasized that Puri is not merely a city but a significant international destination for both tourism and pilgrimage, embodying the living essence of Lord Jagannath.

He noted that the Jagannath Temple Heritage Corridor was developed through the sacrifices of local residents who lost their land, homes, and livelihoods, yet remained devoted to the project.

Khuntia remarked, "From the Rath Yatra to Chandan Yatra, and daily rituals to emergency preparations, it is the local populace who bear the responsibility to facilitate darshan for visitors. Ironically, these very individuals, who have safeguarded and served the temple for generations, now struggle to access their own deity amidst overwhelming tourist crowds."

He pointed out that despite numerous appeals and discussions, the Odisha government has yet to implement a special darshan system for the local residents.

Recalling past measures, he mentioned that under Naveen Patnaik's administration, a dedicated entry point for locals was established through the Western Gate upon presenting ID proof, acknowledging their deep-rooted connection with the temple.

Khuntia asserted, "While tourists may come and go, the residents of Puri live with, serve, and pray to Jagannath daily. Their requests are not political or parochial; they are deeply cultural, traditional, and emotional, and have been long overdue."

He urged the central government to take action on this pressing issue.
