Celebrating Bindyarani Devi's Achievement

President Droupadi Murmu extended her congratulations to Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi after she secured a bronze medal in the women's 58kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow on Monday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also commended the Manipuri athlete for her remarkable performance.

Leaders Acknowledge Her Success

In a message shared on X, President Murmu expressed, "Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam for winning the Bronze Medal in the Women's 58 kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Your determination and resilience have made the nation proud. Your success serves as an inspiration to young athletes across India."

Home Minister Amit Shah also took to X to congratulate the 27-year-old, stating, "Well done Bindyarani Devi! You have made us proud by clinching the Bronze Medal in the Women's 58 kg Weightlifting event at #CWG2026. Wishing you the best for your future endeavors."

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh shared his praise on X, saying, "Congratulations to Bindyarani Devi for winning the Bronze Medal in the Women's 58kg Weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Her relentless determination and dedication have once again brought pride to our nation. Each lift showcased her resilience and fighting spirit, inspiring many young athletes in India. I wish her continued success and many more accolades in the future."

Competition Highlights

Bindyarani showcased an impressive performance to earn India's latest medal in Glasgow, finishing third behind Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who took gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 229kg, and Canada's Ann Sophie Taschereau, who secured silver with 215kg.

The Indian lifter began confidently in the snatch, with her coaches adjusting her opening attempt from 85kg to 83kg. She successfully lifted 83kg, followed by 85kg and 87kg, ending this phase tied with England's Eliza Pratt but ahead on countback.

In the clean and jerk, her initial lift of 110kg was overturned after a jury review due to an elbow buckle during the jerk. However, she rebounded strongly, lifting 112kg on her second attempt, bringing her total to 199kg and briefly placing her in silver-medal contention. Although she could not clear 116kg in her final attempt, her total was sufficient to secure the bronze medal.

A Remarkable Comeback

This podium finish marks Bindyarani's second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal, following her silver at the Birmingham 2022 Games. This achievement is particularly significant as it comes after her recovery from a knee injury in 2023 and her transition between the 55kg and 58kg weight categories.

India's Medal Count

With Bindyarani's bronze, India's medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has reached six, which includes one medal in para powerlifting. So far, India has secured one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
