Bindyarani Devi Clinches Bronze at Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow
Bindyarani Devi's Remarkable Achievement
Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi added another medal to her accolades by winning bronze in the women's 58kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow on Monday.
The 27-year-old athlete from Manipur showcased her skills in a highly competitive final, finishing behind Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who secured gold with a record-breaking total, and Canada's Ann Sophie Taschereau, who took home the silver medal.
Strong Start in the Snatch
Bindyarani kicked off her competition with a strong performance in the snatch section. After her coaching team adjusted her opening attempt from 85kg to 83kg, she executed the lift with ease. She then successfully lifted 85kg on her second try and concluded the snatch phase with a lift of 87kg, tying with England's Eliza Pratt but advancing on countback.
Challenges in the Clean and Jerk
As she moved into the clean and jerk section, Bindyarani faced stiff competition. Her first attempt at 110kg was deemed a no-lift due to an elbow buckle during the jerk. Undeterred, she returned for her second attempt and successfully lifted 112kg, bringing her total to 199kg and placing her in the silver medal position at that moment.
In pursuit of a personal best, she attempted 116kg but was unable to complete the lift. Nevertheless, her total of 199kg was sufficient to earn her the bronze medal, while Lawal dominated the event with a Games record total of 229kg, and Taschereau finished with 215kg.
A Significant Comeback
This bronze medal in Glasgow marks Bindyarani's second podium finish at the Commonwealth Games, following her silver medal win in Birmingham in 2022. Her accomplishment is particularly noteworthy given her recovery from a knee injury in 2023 and her transition between weight categories, fluctuating between the 55kg and 58kg divisions.
India's Performance at Glasgow 2026
With Bindyarani Devi's bronze, India's medal tally has reached five, which includes one medal in para powerlifting. Overall, India has secured six medals at the Glasgow 2026 Games, comprising one gold, three silver, and two bronze.
The medal winners include Jhandu Kumar (bronze, para powerlifting), Rishikanta Singh (silver, weightlifting), Mirabai Chanu (gold, weightlifting), Muthupandi Raja (silver, weightlifting), Gyaneshwari Yadav (silver, weightlifting), and Bindyarani Devi (bronze, weightlifting).
