Power Supply Crisis in Matiapara Village

Bijni, June 14: As temperatures rise, the inhabitants of Matiapara village in Bijni are facing significant challenges due to the lack of reliable electricity.

The community is actively protesting for the installation of a transformer, a basic necessity they claim has been overlooked for more than four years.

On Friday, demonstrators voiced their frustrations against the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), demanding prompt action in the sweltering heat.

Their request is clear: they need a working transformer to guarantee consistent electricity supply to their homes.

An elderly villager expressed his discontent, stating, “We have consistently paid our electricity bills, yet we remain in the dark about when a transformer will be set up. If they cannot resolve this issue, they might as well disconnect us—we pay the same rates as those who enjoy uninterrupted service.”

Residents claim that their repeated requests to local legislator Ajoy Kumar Ray have gone unanswered.

A concerned mother highlighted the impact on children during the current heatwave, saying, “The government has instructed schools to start earlier at 7:30 am due to the heat. However, our children struggle to sleep at night. Without power, it’s unbearably hot, leaving them exhausted and unprepared for school.”

Another villager remarked, “Not everyone has an inverter. We lack voltage for lights and cannot even charge our phones. Students are finding it hard to study, and those returning from the fields face additional discomfort as fans are inoperable due to the voltage issues—all stemming from the absence of a transformer.”

Frustrated by the lack of progress, the villagers have set a deadline—if the transformer is not installed within a week, they plan to organize a larger protest outside the APDCL office.

Many residents also expressed their dissatisfaction with the ruling BJP, accusing them of neglecting their needs.

“There are 900 voters here—600 supported Ajoy Ray because we believed in the party. However, if this neglect continues, we will have to respond accordingly in 2026,” a local resident stated.
