Bihar's Cricket Identity Gains Momentum

On Friday, the dream of Bihar establishing its own IPL franchise gained traction when Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary positively responded to Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal's appeal for a distinct cricket identity for the state. Choudhary indicated that the government is operating in 'mission mode' to enhance cricket in Bihar, amidst a renewed focus on the state's increasing contributions to Indian cricket, particularly through emerging IPL stars and domestic players.

In response to Agarwal's heartfelt request for a Bihar-based cricket team, CM Choudhary expressed on X that the government shares the same vision and is committed to making a 'positive decision' with collective backing. He stated, 'I completely agree with you. For the cricket 'emotion' of Bihar, the government is working in 'mission' mode with a clear 'vision.' With your cooperation, a positive decision will certainly be taken regarding the Bihar cricket team.'

Agarwal later expressed his 'full support and cooperation' for the initiative, wishing success to the sporting talents from Bihar.

Previously, Agarwal raised concerns about Bihar's lack of recognition and cricketing identity compared to states with IPL franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, despite the state producing numerous prominent cricketers.

'Don't you think Bihar deserves an unparalleled team of its own, just like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders?' Agarwal questioned in his tweet.

He highlighted Bihar's contribution to cricket, mentioning players like Ishan Kishan, who hails from Patna and holds the record for the fastest ODI double century, along with rising stars such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sakib Hussain.

Bihar's Cricket Resurgence

Bihar cricket has been experiencing a notable resurgence since the state team rejoined the Ranji Trophy in the 2018-19 season after a 17-year hiatus. The state lost its full membership status following the bifurcation in 2000, which saw most cricket infrastructure transferred to the newly formed Jharkhand, leading to a lengthy legal battle for reinstatement.

This revival has coincided with the rise of several exceptional players from the state. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a teenage batting prodigy, has emerged as one of Bihar cricket's most significant success stories. He was part of India's victorious squad at the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year and has already surpassed the 500-run mark for Rajasthan Royals in the current IPL season.

Fast bowler Sakib Hussain, from Gopalganj district, has also made a strong impact in the ongoing IPL, having debuted for Sunrisers Hyderabad and taken 14 wickets this season.

Bihar's domestic players have set remarkable records as well. Sakibul Gani became the first cricketer in history to score a triple century on his first-class debut, achieving 341 runs against Mizoram in 2022. Left-arm spinner Ashutosh Aman made headlines during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season by taking 68 wickets in just eight matches, breaking the long-standing record of 64 wickets held by legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi since the 1974-75 season.

Additionally, the Bihar team made history in List A cricket by scoring 574/6 against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last year, marking the highest team total in the format's history.

With Bihar consistently producing IPL players and national-level talent, the calls for a more robust cricketing ecosystem and the eventual establishment of an IPL franchise representing the state are gaining momentum both politically and commercially.
