Students Demand Domicile Policy in Bihar

On Thursday, a significant number of students gathered in the state capital to advocate for the establishment of a domicile policy aimed at government job recruitment in Bihar. They argue that Bihar lags behind states like Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, which have already implemented such policies to prioritize local candidates in job opportunities.

The demonstrators expressed concerns that the absence of a domicile policy is contributing to rising unemployment rates and the out-migration of young people from the state. Large groups of students assembled early in the morning, marching through central Patna while chanting slogans and obstructing traffic.

Tensions escalated briefly when police attempted to prevent students from accessing certain areas near the Chief Minister's residence, leading to a minor confrontation.

In response to the growing crowd, security measures were heightened in sensitive locations, with barricades erected to manage the situation. Student leaders assured that their movement would remain peaceful but cautioned that the protests could escalate if their demands were ignored.

The protesters are urging the government to implement a domicile policy for state job recruitment, ensuring that candidates with local residence certificates receive priority, and addressing the issues of unemployment and youth out-migration.

They accused the Nitish Kumar administration of neglecting the needs of local youth and failing to safeguard their rights to employment opportunities. One protester mentioned that if the government does not adopt a domicile policy, they would consider boycotting the upcoming elections.

The groups involved in the protest have vowed to encircle the Chief Minister's residence and continue their demonstrations in the coming days. Student leader Dilip Kumar remarked, 'This is not merely a protest; it is a demand for justice for the youth of Bihar. If our requests are not met, we will initiate a comprehensive state-wide movement.'

The protest heightened tensions in various parts of the city, coinciding with the national observance of 'Sampoorna Kranti Day.' As of now, there has been no official response from government representatives, although sources indicate that discussions are underway regarding how to address the situation.
