Security Upgrade for Political Leaders

The Bihar government has reinstated Z category security for Lalu Prasad Yadav, the leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and his wife, former Chief Minister Rabri Devi. This decision comes after their security was previously downgraded, and they have now been provided with bulletproof vehicles. The reduction in their security had sparked significant political controversy, leading the couple to return the government security personnel assigned to them as a symbolic protest.

Political Controversy and Allegations

The RJD accused the government of intentionally targeting opposition leaders by reducing their security. They claimed that the NDA government in Bihar aimed to diminish the stature of opposition figures by cutting back on their protection. In response, the Bihar government clarified that the adjustments were part of a routine review based on threat assessments. Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu's younger son and the current leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, also returned his government-provided security in protest, although officials confirmed that there had been no changes to his security arrangements.

Change of Residence for Rabri Devi

The decision to provide Z category security to Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi coincides with their move to a private residence. On Thursday, Rabri Devi vacated the government bungalow located at 10 Circular Road in Patna, which had served as her home and the RJD's camp office for nearly two decades. She was asked to leave the bungalow last November when new ministers were being accommodated in the state government, with officials stating that, as the leader of the opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council, she was entitled to a different category of housing.
