Bihar Government Enhances PDS with AI and Digital Solutions
Bihar's Initiative for a Transparent Public Distribution System
Patna, January 6, 2026: The Bihar government is set to implement significant reforms aimed at making the Public Distribution System (PDS) more transparent and free from corruption. All 55,111 ration shops across the state will be equipped with electronic point-of-sale (e-POS) machines linked to digital weighing scales. Additionally, the entire grain distribution process will be monitored using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
According to officials from the Food and Consumer Protection Department, this new system will enable immediate intervention in case of any discrepancies in ration distribution. The AI system will accurately track the quantity of grains, ensuring beneficiaries receive their rightful share. In light of the current issues with fingerprint authentication, alternative identification methods are being introduced. If a fingerprint does not match, beneficiaries will be identified through facial recognition or iris scanning.
This initiative is expected to provide significant relief to millions of ration cardholders in Bihar, as it will not only curb ration theft but also streamline and enhance the reliability of the distribution process. The government's objective is to ensure that the PDS operates entirely on digital and AI-driven platforms, delivering subsidized grains to the needy without any interruptions.
