Financial Support for Gopalganj Athletes

On Sunday, Bihar's Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced a financial grant of Rs 2 lakh each for two taekwondo athletes from Gopalganj, Bhawani Singh and Riya Singh. They have been chosen to represent India at the upcoming World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship 2026 in South Korea.

Choudhary shared this news via a post on X, highlighting that both athletes were struggling financially to cover the costs associated with their participation in this prestigious event. He expressed pride in their selection, stating, "It is a significant achievement for both Bihar and the nation. Bhawani Singh and Riya Singh have shown exceptional talent and dedication. They had requested financial help for travel and other essential expenses, and I am pleased to approve their request for Rs 2 lakh each. I wish them the best as they aim to bring honor to our state and country."

Details of the Championship

The World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship 2026 is set to take place from September 16 to 20 in Chuncheon, South Korea. This championship features taekwondo poomsae, which consists of choreographed movements that mimic defense techniques against multiple opponents.

Profiles of the Athletes

Bhawani Singh, from Ratansarai village, and Riya Singh, from Rampur Sadaun, both belong to the Barauli block of Gopalganj district. Their selection for the Indian team followed impressive performances in national competitions and rigorous training under their coaches.

Bhawani specializes in freestyle poomsae and has secured medals in four national competitions, which contributed to his selection for the Indian team. Riya has also made a name for herself at both state and national levels, earning multiple medals in taekwondo and receiving the Bihar State Sports Award. The duo had approached the Bihar government for financial assistance to support their travel and other expenses for the championship in South Korea. With the Chief Minister's approval of their request, the financial aid is expected to significantly assist them as they prepare for their international debut.
